Fashion Assistants
Being A Fashion Assistant can be exciting & stressful.  If you get the opportunity to support Fashion Designers you will work rigorous schedules according to Fashion Seasons, Fashion Shows and Fashion Deadlines. A Fashion Assistant should be able to help with any aspect of Calendar Managment, Finishing Design Sketches, Sewing Finalized Designs, and Coordinating Model Fittings.

Although Fashion Design Assistants don't need a degree, they must possess a keen sense of Fashion, Style Trends, and Industry PASSION!!  Keeping up with What's HOT, What's NOT, Fashion Magazines, Popular Stylists and Runway shows is VITAL.  Fashion Assistants have diverse backgrounds including, Retail, Fashion Magazines, Fashion Student, or Aspiring Designer.

Skills
Strong planning & communication skills are key for any type of Personal Assistant because you will likely be the primary liaison for the client.  Advanced sewing skills and a strong sense of fashion are critical skills for a Fashion Assistant to have. Ideally their sense of fashion will coincide with the looks the designer is creating. Once a finalized garment is going to production the Fashion Assistant may be in charge of providing hand and computer rendered versions of the design and overseeing that they are completed correctly by the manufacturer, this may include receiving a garment sample or even visiting the production house.

Fashion Assistant Tasks
As a Fashion Assistant your tasks may include more industry specific tasks such as finishing looks with sewing, cutting patterns to make sample garments, accessorizing and photographing them for the designer, Model Fittings and Trunk Shows.  Personal Assistant assignments for a Fashion Assistant can vary depending on the needs of the client but may includde Calendar Management, Pet Sitting, Model , fittings, trunk shows, taking care of a design showroom or cleaning the items after a show. These duties can vary greatly depending on if the designer is a solo practice or a large fashion house with many assistants.

Materials and Designing
A Fashion Design Assistant will likely be in charge of gathering the necessary materials from a fabric warehouse for a design.  It is common for a Fashion Designer to focus on a particular area such as sportswear, knitwear or formal dress. For actual design experience, the Fashion Assistant will get an inside look at how a designer spends their day -- between design, promotion and other tasks.

British Elle editor Lorraine Candy elaborates today on how the Miu Miu dress on her August cover could have appeared on two other major summer covers

. Of selecting cover looks, she explains, "We first see the look on the runway and note it down as a possible for a cover shoot. When we're back in the office, we call it in and match it to the right star. Contrary to popular belief, we don't shoot covers in sequence. If it fits the mood board concept of the cover shoot and the photographer likes it, we take it to the shoot along with a rail of potential clothes." If the celebrity doesn't like it, they find something else.
